How to get rid of strawberry legs during the run-up to your wedding

Say goodbye to the dark bumps on your legs.

For those who prefer smooth skin, strawberry legs—the appearance of small, red or black spots on the legs that resemble the fruit's seed pattern—can be a cause for anxiety. The condition is usually caused when enlarged pores or hair follicles trap dead skin, oil, and bacteria. It can also be caused by folliculitis, keratosis pilaris, or shaving residue. While getting rid of strawberry legs is possible, it requires a comprehensive skincare routine and consistent efforts.

Here are a few steps you should follow to reduce the appearance of strawberry legs.

Exfoliation: Regular exfoliation is a crucial step to remove dead skin cells and unclog hair follicles. You can either use physical scrubs and DIY formulas or use chemical products containing AHAs or BHAs to remove dead skin cells and prevent clogged pores, which often lead to the appearance of strawberry legs. Use a gentle exfoliating scrub or a loofah during your shower routine, especially focusing on the affected areas.

Exfoliation also helps smoothen the skin texture and enhance product absorption. However, be gentle while scrubbing (the spots aren't going to disappear overnight) to avoid irritation. Start with a lower frequency and adjust according to how your skin responds.

Use proper shaving techniques: Shaving in the direction of hair growth with a sharp razor, paired with moisturising shaving cream or gel, reduces irritation and the appearance of strawberry legs. The method minimises ingrown hairs and skin trauma, and provides a smoother finish. Replace your razor blades regularly to ensure a sharp edge for optimal shaving results or consider investing in an electric razor or hair removal cream as an alternative to traditional shaving.

Moisturising: Moisturising your legs is crucial for reducing the appearance of dark spots or strawberry legs. By keeping the skin hydrated, you enhance its barrier function and improve the overall appearance. Regularly applying a hydrating moisturiser, especially after exfoliation or shaving, helps maintain the soft, supple feel of the skin and minimise the visibility of dark pores on the legs.

Laser hair removal: Laser hair removal is a long-term solution for strawberry legs. The treatment targets hair follicles, leading to reduced hair growth and smoother skin with fewer visible pores. Laser treatments can also enhance skin texture. While it is a time-consuming treatment (it demands multiple sessions), laser hair removal offers long-lasting results. Laser hair removal is suitable for all skin types, but consulting a dermatologist before signing up for the treatment is advisable

Avoid wearing tight clothing: Opt for loose-fitting, breathable fabrics to minimise irritation and friction. Add an anti-inflammatory ingredient like aloe vera or witch hazel to your post-shaving routine to reduce redness and soothe the skin.

Consult a dermatologist: Consulting a dermatologist can be beneficial for addressing skin concerns like strawberry legs. They will ensure a comprehensive and effective approach to addressing the issue when DIY remedies stand ineffective.
