How the phool dupatta bloomed into the jaali dupatta—and stole the spotlight

While we’ll always have a soft spot for the phool dupatta, bridal trends are evolving, and the see-through jaali dupatta is quickly becoming the next big thing to add to your wedding mood board. A gentle yet striking nod to Indian craftsmanship, this whisper-light veil isn’t just a bridal accessory—it’s a versatile piece that works across festive and fusion wardrobes alike. Its charm lies in its ethereal fragility, balanced by the precision of handwork that brings it to life.

The evolution of a showstopper

From floral drama to sheer elegance, the bridal dupatta has had a serious glow-up. The phool dupatta—crafted with delicate artificial flowers and often draped as a second veil—has been a beloved part of Indian weddings for years. A true classic, it brings tradition and flair to any bridal entry, turning pheras into full-blown fashion moments. But while it makes for a beautiful statement on the day, it isn’t built to last. Its fragile materials mean it’s unlikely to become an heirloom, or something you’ll treasure (or repurpose) years later.

Enter the jaali dupatta: a delicate yet durable upgrade. It offers longevity, versatility, and a whole lot of shine. Intricate, modern, and rooted in handcraft, it’s a fitting evolution for the contemporary bride.

What is a jaali dupatta?

At its core, the jaali dupatta represents a bride who wishes to make a statement in a not-so-obvious way. Woven with gossamer threads that form a fine mesh, it creates a look that’s both modest and playful—offering coverage while letting your outfit shine through.

Designers and fashion enthusiasts alike are embracing the trend with their own renditions. One of the most recognisable versions is the sheesh jaal dupatta, popularised by the fashion label Itrh. The brand’s founders, Mohit Rai and Ridhi Bansal, describe their version as being inspired by the phoolon ki chadar seen in traditional wedding processions. “Nature has always been a huge inspiration for us,” they share. “The idea was to create something that felt like a breeze—soft, diaphanous, and rooted in emotion.”

Itrh’s version has found fans in celebrities like Kareena Kapoor Khan and Hania Aamir, prompting a wave of recreations in materials like lace, zari, and gotta patti. And while the look may feel light as air, the craftsmanship behind it is anything but effortless. “It’s an heirloom piece that requires hours of painstaking work,” said Rai and Bansal. “We only produce a limited number for brides looking for something truly one-of-a-kind.”

Another noteworthy take is from Nomad, whose Moon Dupatta—recently styled by Ananya Panday—is a more bohemian spin on the jaali look. Delicate, saffron-hued threads are woven into a netted texture that flows effortlessly, whether draped over a saree or a slip dress. The beauty of this dupatta lies in its adaptability: traditional yet contemporary, romantic yet cool.

Why this veil is here to stay

Unlike the phool dupatta, which—though beautiful—will wither away as it cannot be preserved in your wardrobe, the jaali dupatta has real staying power. It’s timeless, practical, and emotionally resonant. A piece you’ll want to archive, revisit, and maybe even pass down.

So whether you’re a bride-to-be or a festive-season maximalist, the jaali dupatta is a reminder that modern bridalwear doesn’t need to shout to be seen. Sometimes, it just needs to shimmer quietly in the light.
