Actor Aamir Khan and Reena Dutta’s daughter, Ira Khan's wedding to fitness trainer Nupur Shikhare is currently the talk of the town. The wedding, which took place on January 3, was without a doubt, a quirky affair. The couple opted for a registered marriage and the groom's entry unravelled in a rather twisted (but entertaining) manner. We're talking about the ‘baraat’!
A fitness trainer by profession, Shikhare jogged for 8 km, from his house to the wedding venue to marry the love of his life. And while you might think that to be the odd part of their wedding, it was his attire that got tongues wagging. Shikhare dressed in a black ‘ganji’ with shorts and sneakers which were an odd contrast to his beautiful bride, Ira Khan who opted for a velvet dupatta with dhoti pants. While Twitter users (now known as ‘X’) have actively been discussing the wedding, we got our editors to tell us what they think.

“Firstly, and factually, he did change after! Regardless, I am all for choice, even if that is a ganji (vest) and shorts for your wedding. It may not work for me, but if it works for you, then power to you. More than anything, I am all for an unobtrusive wedding that is all heart, and this one seemed all about love. Who wants anything more?”

“Knowing that Shikhare is a gym trainer, him arriving at the venue in shorts and a vest for the baraat can be seen as his way of bringing an element of himself on his big day. However, sitting in the same attire throughout the registration ceremony, according to me, is a bit callous. The whole act seemed to be more like an attempt to shock people than ‘being cool’.”

“While it was completely unexpected to see any groom turn up in shorts and vest, it’s really the couple’s choice to do whatever they want. Was he underdressed? Majorly! But his nonchalance and having no need for external validation is inspiring. I don’t think I can ever reach that level of comfort. In my opinion, turning up so unadorned at their own wedding is like the ultimate level of sartorial enlightenment I will never achieve.”

“Although (seriously) unconventional—the ganji-shorts combo, the entry—all appeared to be part of the groom's entrance, which seemed like a fun thing to do, especially considering he is a gym trainer. More importantly, it was their wedding, and everyone at the celebration, including the bride and both of their parents, had a good laugh. Not to mention, Ira did have Nupur change in time for the reception! People take everything too seriously. Traditions are important, of course, but people are allowed to have fun with unconventional twists to their (own) weddings!”

“Many people have given many reasons as to why Ira Khan's husband Nupur Shikhare wore workout clothes (shorts and a ganji) to his wedding. But no matter what the truth is, the fact of the matter is that it shows a lack of effort. When your bride is dolled up from head to toe, the least a man can do is shower and put on a sherwani or a simple kurta. It's about respecting your bride and the occasion which is supposed to be a day you will remember for the rest of your life. So, to all the grooms reading this, please put more effort into your appearance. At your wedding and even after that.”
Adit Ganguly, Assistant Editor-Entertainment
"What people are forgetting is that it's his big day too. He can wear what he wants and props to him for doing just that. What people should be asking, is not if what he wore was right or wrong, but if the couple had discussed what they'd be wearing on the biggest day of their lives. If they did, then who are we to judge? And if they didn't, one person's surprise is another person's shock. If this was a last-minute surprise, that Shikhare thought would be cool, then he should brace himself for Khan to let him know about his goof-up for years to come."
