When one thinks of honeymoons, relaxing on a beach lounge chair with a picturesque view of the ocean or walking around and exploring a beautiful city come to mind. But if and your partner would like something more adventurous, something that gives you goose bumps (in a good way) and a heady adrenaline rush, we’ve curated a list of places across India that should be a part of your honeymoon planning.
Gulmarg, Kashmir
Do: skiing
Have you watched one too many Bollywood movies, where romance unfolds on snow-clad slopes of some skiing locale in Europe, and had the urge to recreate the same with your partner? You can do it, for your honeymoon, without stepping out of the country! Kashmir’s Gulmarg is known for being the third-highest ski resort in the world, and its pristine white slopes invite ski enthusiasts to enjoy innumerable snow runs. If you’re a seasoned skier, you’ll feel right at home at Gulmarg. And if you’d like to take it slow, you can enjoy other activities like gondola rides, and treks.
Allepey, Kerala
Do: backwater kayaking
Kayaking, be it in a serene lake or on the slightly more tempestuous waters of a sea, is one of those activities that does not require professional training sessions or practice. So, if you and your partner are newbie adventurers and are seeking a thrilling experience without going overboard, kayaking will fit the bill. There's also backwater kayaking, a variation of the sport, which is on the rise and will be right up your alley. If staying in a house boat seems a little too plain and passive for you two, make your way through the many canals as you discover small bridges, floating markets, passing villages, and banks lined with coconut trees. Need we say more?
Havelock, Andaman and Nicobar Islands
Do: snorkeling and scuba diving
The azure waters of Havelock Island in Andaman make is home to diverse marine life of the region. Be it snorkelling at Elephant Beach or scuba diving at Radhanagar Beach, you have plenty of options to choose from. No prior expertise is needed for snorkelling (yes, even if you don’t know how to swim!) while for scuba diving, several diving schools offer crash courses before you go underwater to explore the reefs, corals, and their residents.
Rishikesh, Uttarakhand
Do: river rafting
If the idea of braving a fast-flowing river atop a raft sounds like an ideal vacation for you and your spouse, don’t miss the river rafting in Rishikesh. More popularly known for attracting pilgrims, thanks to its many temples, it acts as a place of pilgrimage of a different kind for adventure enthusiasts, who come here every year during early summers and post the monsoon to experience white water rafting. Book one of the tents that line the banks of the Ganges for a true-blue experience or pick one of the many plush hotels dotting the region if you’d rather stay in comfort.
Bir Billing, Himachal Pradesh
Do: paragliding
If you or your partner are not water babies, and would much rather do any other activity, then paragliding at Bir Billing should be on your bucket list. Tucked in the valley of Himachal Pradesh, the village has shot to popularity over the past few years for being the paragliding capital of India—it even held a world cup for the sport earlier this year. Once strapped to your parachute and up in the air, you’ll be in for a scenic view straight out of a fairytale—think lush green slopes interspersed with gurgling streams and waterfalls. What better way to bond with your boo than having a once-in-a-lifetime experience together?
