Our 6-step guide to mascara cocktailing for achieving show-stopping, voluminous lashes

Let your lashes do the talking!

Who doesn’t dream of having fuller, voluminous lashes without breaking the bank or dealing with fake eyelashes? Well, you’re in luck! A trending beauty technique is taking over our social feeds, and it’s all about achieving those stunning lashes, rather effortlessly. It's called mascara cocktailing.

What exactly is mascara cocktailing, you ask? Well, it’s like mixing your favourite spirits for a potent cocktail, but for your lashes. This technique helps you achieve a show-stopping lash look by combining different mascaras and application methods; think long, lifted lashes in just two or three coats. All this, without the dreaded clumps that are messy and painful to clean. Whether you desire dramatic volume, captivating length, intense curls, or a combination of these, mascara cocktailing might just be the trend you need to hop on.

Step 1: Before you start mascara cocktailing, ensure you have the following supplies handy:

Select two or more mascaras with different purposes, such as lengthening, volumising, curling, or waterproof options. Make sure they are not dried out.

Eyelash curlers
If you want to give your lashes a dramatic look by adding a little bit of curl, have an eyelash curler on hand.

Cotton swabs or disposable mascara wands
These will help achieve precise application and avoiding clumps.

Step 2: Begin with a clean base: Start with clean eyelashes. Remove any old mascara or make-up residue using a gentle make-up remover or micellar water.

Step 3: Curl your lashes: If you want to add curl to your lashes, use an eyelash curler before applying any mascara. Curl your lashes as close to the roots as possible and hold them for a few seconds.

Step 4: Apply the first mascara: Begin the application with a mascara that provides the effect you want the most. For example, if you desire volume, start with a volumising mascara. Apply it from the base to the tips of your lashes, moving the wand slightly to separate and coat each lash. Allow it to dry for a few seconds.

Step 5: Add the second mascara: Take the second mascara, which should serve a different purpose than the first (e.g., lengthening if you started with volumising). Apply this mascara over the first one, again from the base to the tips. The combination of formulas will enhance both volume and length.

Step 6: Repeat the entire technique if desired: If you want to achieve a further enhanced look, you can continue with additional mascaras that offer unique benefits, such as curling or waterproof formulas. Apply them in the same manner, always starting with the mascara that provides the most significant effect you want to achieve.

Use disposable wands or cotton swabs: To ensure your lashes remain separated and clump-free, use disposable mascara wands or cotton swabs to comb through your lashes between each application. This also helps in blending the formulas seamlessly.

Let each layer dry: Allow each layer of mascara to dry for a few seconds before applying to prevent smudging and clumping.

Finish with a setting mascara: If you want an extra hold or waterproofing, finish your mascara cocktail with a setting mascara. This will help lock in the desired lash look and extend its longevity.
