5 things to keep in mind while planning surprise proposal

Keep the momentous occasion under wraps and make it every bit special.

Asking for your partner’s hand in marriage is one of the most significant moments in life. And while it can be nerve-wracking, the thought of spending the rest of your life with your partner is also exciting. But before that, you have to plan the proposal and make sure your partner is pleasantly surprised. We won’t lie to you, this is not easy, especially if you’ve been together for a long time as your partner will notice any shift in your routine and start to speculate. However, here's how you can still keep it a secret!

Make sure both of you are ready

This might be a given but we are still going to put it out there—the proposal should not be a complete surprise. Before you plan a proposal, talk about marriage with your partner and make sure you are on the same page when it comes to your needs and wants. Don’t leave anything up in the air. Also, speak to your partner’s family members and state your intentions. This proposal should not catch anyone off guard.

Come up with a solid plan and a back-up

The rule of thumb is, keep it simple. If you plan something anything out of the ordinary, it might make your partner speculate. So, if you’re going to propose during a vacation, for instance, make sure it’s when they least expect it. Or you could include the proposal in your daily routine to make it even more special and candid. But think of a plan and work towards it instead of just winging it or proposing out of the blue.

However, no matter what you plan, keep a back-up. Even the most well-thought-out plans can go wrong. And let’s be honest, this is one of the most important moments of your life. Nothing can be left to chance.

Ask for help

One of the most important steps is to ask your partner’s friends or family for help with planning the proposal. Considering, that these are the people who know your partner the best (apart from you, of course), you will need their input and opinions. You will need someone to help you pick out the perfect ring, record the proposal, distract your partner (if your plan calls for that) and also take your partner to get their nails done and pick out a special outfit without them getting suspicious. There is nothing wrong with asking a few close people to be a part of your special moment.

Write down what you’re going to say

A crucial step in planning your proposal is knowing what you’re going to say. As much as we wish, this isn’t a rom-com where you can wing it perfectly. So, to avoid stumbling or fumbling, it’s best to know exactly what to say, write it down and maybe rehearse it. It doesn’t have to be perfect but it’s always better to be prepared, right?

Focus on every small detail

A lot of the times, when we are planning something big, we forget to focus on the smaller details. For instance, ensure the venue is decorated with your partner’s favourite flowers or include some inside jokes in your speech. Make it romantic and personal.
