Having spent a bomb on the venue, the decor, your attire for the event, amongst other wedding spends, there’s no way that you and your partner, two people with left feet, don’t end up dancing at the sangeet ceremony. You could have stage fright, trouble remembering steps, or poor eye-hand coordination, but you know, and your family and friends know, that you and your to-be spouse will have to shake a leg at the sangeet.
So what are the songs that a couple can choose? And what do they end up doing? Kanchi Shah, choreographer and owner of Two Right Feet, has some handy tips.
Songs for the couple
Chunnari Chunnari, Biwi No. 1 (1999)
“It’s a song with a very basic step and one that everyone knows,” says Shah. All that the groom needs is a chunnari and then to just sway it in any direction (it’s the thought that counts).
Kuch Naa Kaho, Kuch Naa Kaho (2003)
“Here’s a song that makes things very easy for the guy since the girl has to do more. She can go around him, [and] do steps that make his life easier. When the hook part of the song arrives, the groom gets to do his part and get his few seconds of the limelight,” she adds.
Raataan Lambiyan, Shershaah (2021)
It’s easier to dance to a song if you hear the same thing again and again. “The reason why this song is chosen by couples is because of its repetitive lyrics. The steps are simple as the guy has to hold his partner by the waist and do a dipping action that’s followed by hand gestures. Having one move for a song looks great,” says Shah.
As far as the do’s and don’ts go, Shah recommends one thing to steer clear of. “I’d advise the couple to not choose slow songs for their sangeet ceremony as they’re always difficult. Having a ballroom vibe is something to avoid. Time goes very slow and there’s a lot that you have to do which makes things difficult.”
Group performances make things easier
Having your friends, family, and loved ones by your side at your sangeet ceremony performing to the same songs as you makes things easier for the couple who face stage anxiety. Shah says, “We choose songs whose hook steps are iconic, for example, ‘Gallan Goodiyaan’ or ‘Chaiyya Chaiyya’. The major work and heavy lifting during the song is done there. The couple knows that they if can’t do much during the song, they will pack a punch on the hook steps.”
And if you’re a couple that’s struggling to think of a song since you can’t dance, Shah’s got just what you’re looking for. “There’s always ‘Pappu Can’t Dance Sala’. The song itself describes your plight and makes the situation extremely funny.”
