Two experts tell us why the seating arrangement at your wedding is as important as the decor

Good vibes only!

The seating arrangement at your wedding is just as important as the décor, if not more. Where your guests sit, and who they sit next to, can play a significant role in establishing the overall aesthetic and vibe of the occasion. It’s no surprise, then, that wedding experts place tremendous importance on this essential element.

“The venue and the number of guests attending the event are the two most important factors when determining the seating arrangement. Apart from that, the type of event, theme, and couples’ requirements help in making a decision,” says Aashna Saran, founder and creative head, Aash Studio.

While the amphitheatre set-up and herringbone seating pattern have been gaining prominence, many young couples are turning to more informal styles to create a cosier and more intimate space. Sabah Shaikh, founder and creative director, Atisuto Events, shares, “Millennial couples are moving away from formal seating, and are opting for a more inclusive and interactive arrangement. For instance, we recently worked on a picnic-style seating, featuring hanging swing tents, cabana-inspired lounge areas, and low beach seating with floral installations.”

According to Saran, many couples prefer to combine contemporary seating with comfort. “Until a few years ago, we were following symmetry in seating styles. But now, creating an asymmetrical and scattered arrangement—that is aesthetically pleasing, needless to say—is a shift many are willing to make. There is also a lot of emphasis on ensuring that every nook and corner that we design is Pinterest-y and Instagram- worthy.”

Running us through the process, Shaikh explains, “The larger theme of the event is designed with the help of a mood board and swatches. Once that is finalised, we move on to the details keeping in mind the colour palette and themes.” Saran adds, “We pick a print or pattern for the seating and covering. For instance, a customised throw can be added to the seats, along with extravagant floral arrangements around the chairs. Plus, chair tie-backs can be incorporated across different types of seats, to maintain uniformity through the event.”
