DIY decor, silk flowers, and fake cakes: budget wedding hacks that actually work without seeming tacky

We break down which tricks actually work, what to skip, and how to make your big day look effortlessly stunning without spending a fortune.

With wedding costs going through the roof, it’s no secret that most couples are trying to pull off a big-day glow-up without maxing out their bank accounts. Cutting down the guest list, skipping the extras, trying every “genius” hack you see online—it’s all fair game. And thanks to social media, cheap hacks are everywhere: fake flowers, DIY stationery, mason jar centrepieces, and all the rest of it.

You scroll through Pinterest and social media, and suddenly it feels like every couple is either making their own table decorations out of fairy lights or laying down a cake that is 70 per cent styrofoam. You’re inspired, you’re excited, maybe even a little terrified, and then reality hits: some hacks are total lifesavers, while some just end up looking like a craft project gone wrong. Like the tiny centrepieces your friends help make, which sound cute in theory but under the soft lighting, are just....crafts that may not always look as polished as you'd envisioned.

So, which hacks are actually worth it, and which ones are better left on Pinterest boards?

Fake cakes that pass the vibe check

You've probably seen them on Instagram. Fake cakes made out of styrofoam can be a lifesaver if you do them right. The trick? Make sure at least one of the layers is real for cutting, and the rest looks flawless, like “no one would ever guess it’s not real” flawless. This way, you can save hundreds or even thousands without anyone noticing. The golden rule: skip the cheap plastic versions. Your cake should feel intentional, not like a last-minute craft panic.

Silk flowers that feel like the real thing

Now we know how expensive flowers are, especially the aesthetic ones in pastel tones. And it's easy to turn to fake plastic ones that seem almost life-like, but are far too shiny and tacky for a wedding. Instead, go for high-quality silk blooms, especially if you’re doing a destination wedding or want flowers that actually last past the reception (hello, keepsakes!). They photograph beautifully, don’t wilt halfway through dinner, look classy without the cost, and no shiny fake look. Mix in some greenery or a few real blooms, and suddenly your “budget hack” looks luxe.

DIY centrepieces that don’t scream “DIY”

There’s a fine line between charming and chaotic when it comes to DIY centrepieces. A few candles, a simple floral arrangement, or a tasteful mason jar can look effortlessly chic. Go a little overboard, and suddenly your tables look like the contents of a craft store unravelled all over them. Our suggestion? Pick one standout DIY element with a few small knick-knacks around it, and you have an arrangement that doesn't end up looking like a yard sale.

Lighting as your secret weapon

Never underestimate lighting. It’s like magic for weddings. String lights, lanterns, candles, or subtle uplighting can turn even the simplest space into something straight out of a magazine. And unlike some other hacks, this one never reads “cheap.” It just makes everything else look instantly better.

Stationery that looks intentional

Digital invites, printable menus, or DIY calligraphy can totally work, if you do it thoughtfully. Avoid flimsy, obviously last-minute printouts. Focus on fonts, colours, and materials that feel deliberate. With a little care, budget-friendly stationery can look totally.

Budget wedding hacks aren’t about cutting corners; they’re about making smart, intentional choices. Choose quality over quantity, keep DIY simple, and think about how everything will look in photos. Do this, and your wedding can be stunning without breaking the bank. Budget-friendly doesn’t have to mean tacky. All it takes is a little planning, taste, and restraint.
