This wedding reception featured a cake that dropped from the ceiling

For Shifa Gandhi and Shazeb Abbas, their wedding was never meant to be confined to one destination. Spread across Atlanta and Dubai over several months, their celebrations brought together family and friends for five events that reflected the journey they had shared. From intimate personal moments to grand celebrations, every stop along the way added another chapter to their story.

The couple's relationship began as a friendship. Born in Mumbai, Gandhi spent her early years between India and Atlanta before settling in the US at the age of seven. Abbas, on the other hand, was born and raised in Atlanta. Moving in the same social circles, Gandhi and Abbas naturally spent time together before their bond slowly grew into something more. By the time they realised they were in love, they had already become best friends, creating a relationship built on comfort, trust, and genuine companionship.

Before the wedding celebrations began, Abbas planned a proposal that was every bit as personal as their relationship. On November 29, 2024, he surprised Gandhi with a scavenger hunt through places that had shaped their love story. Guided by riddles, she visited the cafe where they had their first coffee date, the spot where they celebrated Valentine's Day, and other meaningful locations, with a gift waiting at every stop.

Before the final surprise, the couple exchanged permanent bracelets as a symbol of their commitment. The evening ended on the rooftop of Wagyu House in Atlanta, where Abbas proposed surrounded by their closest friends, a heart-shaped floral installation, and the soft notes of Lana Del Rey's 'Say Yes to Heaven'.

The wedding festivities officially began with a lively mehendi at The Westin in Duluth, Atlanta, where colourful decor, music and dancing brought together loved ones before everyone travelled to Dubai for the celebrations that followed. Guests arrived in Dubai with a relaxed welcome lunch at Hilton Al Habtoor before the energy shifted for the sangeet at Delano, Bluewaters. With around 300 guests in attendance, the evening was packed with performances, music and dancing.

The nikkah at Four Seasons Jumeirah offered one of the most memorable moments of the celebrations. Rather than making a traditional entrance, Gandhi walked down a catwalk style aisle as a violinist played music from Veer-Zaara, creating a cinematic atmosphere. Instead of wearing the customary bridal red, she chose a gold Tarun Tahiliani ensemble.

The celebrations reached another high point at the reception held at Atlantis The Royal. The evening surprised guests with a wedding cake that descended dramatically from the ceiling, creating one of the most talked about moments of the weekend.

A month later, the festivities came full circle with a valima reception at the Omni Atlanta, where family and friends gathered once again to celebrate the newlyweds.

Among the many beautiful details woven into the celebrations were the custom perfumes Gandhi and Abbas had created together during a Valentine's Day perfume making class, which they wore throughout the wedding weekend. The couple also exchanged handwritten letters and private vows away from the spotlight, creating a quiet moment just for themselves.

Whilst the celebrations stretched across continents, it was these deeply personal touches that made the wedding feel intimate and every bit magical.
