Born days apart, married miles away: This wedding brought India To Mexico


Some love stories begin with a chance meeting. Anchal Sud and Cheerag Amin's began before either of them knew it. Born just days apart in the same hospital, raised in different American states, and unknowingly connected through mutual friends for years, the couple eventually found each other in New York City, where friendship slowly turned into love.

Their wedding, held over five days at Grand Velas Riviera Maya in Mexico, became an extension of that story, bringing together Gujarati and Punjabi traditions, thoughtful fashion, and deeply personal details that reflected who they are as a couple.

A love story years in the making

Although destiny had placed them in the same hospital at birth, it took years before Anchal and Cheerag truly crossed paths. After a brief meeting at a Bollywood dance competition, they reconnected in New York while pursuing their careers. Their proposal carried that same sense of intention.

Cheerag planned an entire weekend around Anchal's favourite things, from theatre and kayaking to cooking classes, before proposing on a rooftop overlooking San Diego, complete with a violinist, hidden family members, and a ring crafted by the same jeweller who had designed engagement rings for her mother and grandmother.

Mexico, with an Indian heart

As the first wedding in both families, the couple wanted a destination celebration that felt intimate without compromising on tradition. Grand Velas Riviera Maya became their answer, allowing every ceremony to unfold within one resort while bringing nearly 250 guests together for five days.

Every event blended Indian customs with Mexican hospitality, from tequila tastings and mariachi performances to thoughtfully curated Indo-Mexican menus created alongside celebrity chef Arthi Sampath and the resort's culinary team. Signature cocktails, colour-coordinated guest dress codes, handwritten notes, personalised vows, and dance performances involving almost every guest transformed the celebrations into something entirely their own.

Fashion that told her story

For Anchal, fashion became an extension of her identity rather than simply a bridal wardrobe. She deliberately moved through a considered colour story over the week, beginning with a vibrant orange custom Arpita Mehta sharara for the poolside mehndi before embracing breezy Indo-Western dressing in a custom Anamika Khanna ensemble for the welcome party.

A soft pink Shanti Banaras lehenga brought a fresh take to the haldi, while a pastel Falguni Shane Peacock couture creation allowed her to dance freely at the sangeet, concealing a custom dhoti beneath for her bhangra performance.

Her wedding day balanced tradition with modernity. For the chooda ceremony, she honoured family by wearing her mother's wedding jewellery with a classic red sari. She then walked down the aisle in the very first bridal lehenga she had ever tried on: an ivory, silver and pale green Tarun Tahiliani couture creation paired with heirloom kundan jewellery from her family's jeweller.

The evening brought another change into a deep red Arpita Mehta draped silhouette before concluding the celebrations in a sculptural black Gaurav Gupta couture look that transformed into trousers—challenging long-held bridal conventions while allowing her to dance until sunrise.

Cheerag's wardrobe echoed the same balance of heritage and modern tailoring, with looks by Rajesh Pratap Singh, Kunal Rawal, Sabyasachi, Reiss and Gaurav Gupta that complemented every chapter of the celebrations.

More than a destination wedding, Anchal and Cheerag's celebrations reflected a new generation of Indian weddings: where tradition is honoured, individuality is celebrated, and every detail carries meaning. From the clothes they wore to the food they served and the stories they chose to tell, their Riviera Maya wedding proved that heritage travels beautifully, no matter where in the world you choose to say "I do."
