How drone photography can capture stunning wedding moments

In recent years, drone photography and videography have become a game-changer in wedding cinematography. From capturing grand venues to adding a cinematic flair to key moments, drones offer a fresh perspective that traditional cameras simply can’t match. Priya Maganti, CEO and co-founder of RVR PRO and RVR Eventz Design, along with Shruti J Khanna of Cupcake Productions, highlight this trend.

"Drone shots work exceptionally well for grand, large-scale moments in Indian weddings. The baraat procession, with the groom arriving on a horse or luxury car, looks stunning from above, capturing the crowd’s energy and celebration," says Maganti. Khanna agrees too, emphasising the impact of aerial perspectives: "Drones excel at capturing wide aerial views of the venue, dramatic entrances, and the couple's first look from above."

In conversation with Brides Today, the duo explore the key aspects of drone wedding photography and videography and suggest how couples can make the most of it. 

The key moments for these stunning shots

Drone footage shines during large-scale moments, offering a bird’s-eye view of the celebration. Priya Maganti shares some standout occasions: “The mandap setup, whether on a beach, in a palace courtyard, or within a lush garden, appears breathtaking when viewed from the air. Aerial shots also beautifully capture pre-wedding festivities, such as a colourful haldi ceremony or a sangeet night illuminated by dazzling lights."

Khanna adds that drones also help capture special moments from new angles: "They can beautifully document the ceremony and reception from unique angles."

Blending drone footage with ground-based photography 

Maintaining a seamless flow between aerial and ground-level shots is crucial for a polished wedding film. Maganti explains their approach: "We carefully plan transitions between aerial and ground shots to maintain a cohesive visual flow. Wide drone shots can establish the grandeur of a venue, followed by ground-level close-ups of emotional moments to create a balanced storytelling approach."

Khanna emphasises the importance of coordination as well: "To blend drone shots with ground photography, maintain a consistent colour grading and shooting style. Coordinating with the ground crew ensures seamless transitions."

The must-have drone shots 

Certain drone shots can significantly enhance a wedding album or video. A top-down shot of the mandap highlights intricate décor, while a slow-moving shot of the couple standing amidst a scenic backdrop creates a breathtaking moment. A 360-degree orbit shot of the wedding venue showcases its full beauty, while a zoom-out shot captures an extremely wide perspective, offering a view that traditional cameras cannot achieve. These cinematic shots add depth, scale, and drama to wedding films. On the other hand, Khanna also suggests sweeping views of the venue, dynamic fly-ins of the couple, and panoramic shots of the reception can add depth and grandeur to the wedding film.

How much is too much 

Using drone footage sparingly and strategically is key to keeping the wedding video intimate and engaging. Maganti notes, "The key is the strategic use of drone footage—too much can disrupt the intimacy of a wedding film. Aerial shots establish the setting, while ground-level cinematography focuses on emotions and close-up details." Khanna adds, "Balance is achieved by interspersing drone footage with ground shots, matching frames in transitions. Use similar angles and motion styles to create a cohesive narrative."

Tips for couples to maximize drone photography 

To get the best drone footage on their wedding day, couples should first choose a venue that allows drones and check for any restrictions in advance. Scheduling drone shots during ideal lighting conditions, like the golden hour, ensures the most flattering results. Coordinating with the planner helps avoid overhead obstructions, such as mandap canopies or stage setups, which could interfere with key shots. Informing guests and family beforehand prevents unexpected obstructions in aerial footage. Most importantly, trusting the professionals allows the photography team to capture the best angles and moments without added stress. Khanna echoes these sentiments: “Couples should communicate their vision and preferred shots, find open spaces for drone use, and schedule aerial shots during optimal light conditions. Staying relaxed and enjoying the moment will produce authentic photos."

What’s the best time for drone footage during a wedding? 

The timing of drone shots can make a significant difference in the final visuals. Maganti highlights, “Sunrise and sunset are the best times for breathtaking drone shots, as the soft lighting adds a magical glow. During the baraat, the aerial perspective captures the scale and energy of the procession."

Khanna also emphasizes the importance of special moments, "Drone footage works best during outdoor ceremonies, receptions with stunning backdrops, romantic sunset moments, fireworks, and specially drone shows these days."

Ideal weddings for drone photography 

Certain types of weddings benefit more from drone footage due to their expansive venues and scenic settings. Maganti shares, “Drone footage is especially impactful for destination weddings, outdoor weddings, and large-scale celebrations. Beachside mandaps, royal palace weddings, and hillside venues look spectacular from an aerial view." She also recalls their global experience: "Having covered weddings in Dubai, New York, Bahrain, and Thailand, we’ve seen firsthand how drone shots elevate storytelling. The skyscraper skyline of New York, the luxurious resorts of Dubai, the island charm of Thailand, and the modern elegance of Bahrain all look breathtaking from above."

Khanna agrees, "Drone footage is particularly advantageous for destination weddings and outdoor venues with scenic landscapes. Open spaces allow for creative shots that showcase the couple against breathtaking backdrops."
