The "blurry wedding photo" trend: Why couples are embracing the art of motion
A wedding expert sheds light on why couples love this unique style and how it adds emotion and storytelling to their wedding album.
In the ever-evolving world of wedding photography, a striking new trend is taking centre stage: intentionally blurred images. While sharp, meticulously composed wedding photos will always have their place, many modern couples are embracing the artistic charm of blurry photography. This trend is particularly resonating with Indian weddings, where movement, emotions, and vibrant colours define the celebration. Priya Maganti, CEO and co-founder of RVR PRO and RVR Eventz Design, shares her expert insights on why couples are gravitating towards this unique aesthetic and how it can enhance the storytelling of a wedding album.
Blurry photos: A dreamlike touch to wedding memories
“Indian weddings are rich with movement, colour, and raw emotions, making them ideal for artistic photography,” says Maganti. “Many modern couples are drawn to blurry photos because they add a candid, dreamlike quality to their album.” The intentional blur brings a sense of spontaneity and romance, capturing fleeting moments in a way that feels natural and unfiltered. While traditional portraits remain a staple, the use of controlled blur can elevate the wedding album into a cinematic experience.
Enhancing mood and storytelling through blur
According to Maganti, blurry photography is particularly well-suited for high-energy wedding events such as cocktail parties, sangeets, and night celebrations. “For cocktail nights, the blur can capture the glimmer of fairy lights, laughter, and clinking glasses, adding a cinematic feel to the celebration,” she explains. “Sangeet performances are all about high-energy dancing, and motion blur can beautifully highlight twirls, jumps, and swirling lehengas.”
The reception and after-party are other moments where blur can enhance the ambiance. Slow shutter effects can highlight neon lights, sparklers, and the lively chaos of the dance floor. “At the same time, we ensure that key emotional and portrait moments remain sharp to balance the storytelling,” Maganti adds.
The different types of blurry photography for weddings
Not all blurry photos are created equal. Maganti emphasises that different types of blur can be strategically used to enhance wedding photography. “Motion blur works exceptionally well for high-energy moments like the sangeet, baraat, and reception dance floor,” she says. “A soft, artistic blur adds a dreamy and intimate touch to romantic portraits, while slow shutter techniques enhance the glow of flickering diyas, fireworks, and handheld sparklers.”
By using these techniques intentionally, wedding photographers can craft images that feel ethereal and deeply emotional.
Balancing sharpness with blur
While blurry photography has its charm, striking the right balance is crucial. Maganti and her team incorporate artistic blur selectively, ensuring the integrity of important moments. “We explain that while blurred photos add an artistic dimension, the essence of Indian weddings lies in their vibrant traditions, expressions, and intricate details,” she says. “Important moments like the tying of the mangalsutra, applying the sindoor, and family portraits should be crisp and clear to preserve their cultural and emotional significance.”
The key to successful blurry photography is control. “Even when using motion blur, we ensure that the subject, whether it's the bride, groom, or a ritual, remains recognisable,” Maganti explains. “We use framing, light, and composition to retain the emotion while allowing movement to add drama to the shot.”
Do couples love blurry wedding photos?
While some couples are hesitant at first, many fall in love with the effect once they see it incorporated into their albums. “Many couples love these artistic shots when they see them in their albums, as they give an editorial and candid feel,” Maganti shares. “However, most still prefer a mix of classic, sharp images and a few creatively blurred ones.”
Fashion-forward and contemporary couples, in particular, are requesting more of these artistic shots, drawn to their modern, magazine-like aesthetic.
When to avoid blurry photos
Despite their artistic appeal, some wedding moments require absolute clarity. “Blurry shots should be avoided during critical ceremonial moments like the mangalsutra tying, sindoor application, and vidai, where clear expressions matter,” Maganti advises. “Similarly, group shots with family and elders should remain sharp to preserve the details of traditional attire and jewellery.”
Finding a middle ground for couples who want blur
If a couple desires blurry effects for key moments, Maganti and her team offer creative alternatives. “If a couple wants a blurry effect for a special moment, we offer them creative alternatives,” she says. “For example, we might use double exposure or selective focus to give a dreamy effect without losing clarity. We also capture both sharp and blurred versions so they can choose their favourite.”
Final thoughts: Blurry photography as a wedding art form
The blurry photo trend is more than just a fleeting fad—it’s a way to capture movement, emotion, and ambiance in a way that traditional photography sometimes cannot. When used intentionally and in balance with sharp images, blurry photography can transform a wedding album into an evocative, editorial masterpiece.
As Maganti beautifully sums it up, “When used intentionally, these styles add emotion and depth to wedding photography, making the memories feel even more magical while ensuring the essence of each moment is preserved.”
For couples considering this trend, the key is to trust their photographer’s artistic vision while ensuring that the most meaningful moments remain clear and timeless.
