Saree Lovers Unite, Delhi Is Hosting A Unique Saree Festival
The not-so-humble saree is a part of our everyday lives, while at the same time being revered and celebrated on runways across the world.
There are few Indians who don’t love a classic saree. The not-so-humble saree is a part of our everyday lives, while at the same time being revered and celebrated on runways across the world. And in a country as rich and diverse as India, there are innumerable varieties of sarees, as well as ways to drape it.
Bringing it all together under one roof is Red Earth’s annual Saree Festival. To be held from 4-6 May, the Saree Festival brings together pan-Indian handlooms from all over the country, as well as styling sessions and films celebrating the saree.
As far as brands are concerned, highlights include Eachaneri with contemporary saris, Telangana weaves by Icchha Vastra, chikankari and shibori concept saris by Meiraas, and eco-chic trendy collections by Peeli Dori. For the more earthy saree wearer, there will be handblocked, linen, benarasi, Maheshwari, and Bengal handloom weaves.
On May 4, enthusiasts can look forward to screenings from three filmmakers who explore the saree through multiple perspectives. Bon Duke brings his distinct editorial and movement based visuals, Q, a provocative vision and lens on Indian culture, and Pooja Kaul her intimate and sensitive storytelling.
On May 5, along with conversations with three dancers, Mrinalini Msriin (Kathak), Ranjini Nair (Kuchipudi), and Shreyasi Gopinath (Bharatnatyam), there will be a recital featuring all three dancers who unite to perform to poetry and narratives from mythology that use the Saree as a leitmotif.
On May 6, for those more interested in the saree as a garment, there will be talks and interactive modules by style blogger Patricia Dhar, Red FM Nisha Narayanan, and leading fashion designer of Abraham & Thakore, David Abraham.
The Saree Festival will be held at 1AQ Art Gallery, Mehrauli Road, New Delhi-110030. Entry is open to all.
