It’s to celebrate, Kolkata’s Epicureans! The City of Joy gets its own version of The Fatty Bao (a part of the Olive group) as the popular Asian gastrobar debuts in Kolkata in a spanking new avatar at Fort Knox, on Camac Street, ahead of Christmas and New Year 2018. And guess what, The Fatty Bao launches with many surprises—a 75-seater, Izakaya and Noodle Shop-inspired Asian menu that’s brimming with fresh flavours and signature cocktails in a modern, intimate space. This is the seventh outpost in India, after one in Bengaluru, one in Delhi, and three in Mumbai. The Fatty Bao promises a vibrant Asian dining and bar experience, successfully marrying a laidback vibe with award-winning food and drinks. The food and beverage teams draw inspiration from Asia’s diverse culinary repertoire, while an Izakaya, a Japanese Gastrobar, inspires executive chef, Prashanth Puttaswamy's menu. Addictive small plates, soupy noodles, hearty bowls of ramen, the signature baos, expertly rolled sushi, chargrilled Robatayaki skewers, and a whole lot more means there’s always something new to try alongside your favourites.

What sets it apart, however, is its new positioning of the Izakaya and Noodle Shop offering. Izakaya-style dining, popular in Japanese gastrobars comes to The Fatty Bao Kolkata, and is best enjoyed with friends and colleagues in large groups, especially because the wide variety of small plates on the menu are ideal for sharing. The flavours and inspiration for the newly bottled cocktails, whilst rooted in Asian-inspired ingredients, also emphasise using unique teas to create alcoholic versions of the ever-popular iced tea.

Conceptually, The Fatty Bao Kolkata is inspired by elements of its predecessors but tells its own story that goes with the city’s distinctive culinary notes. New on the menu at Kolkata include Fried Fish Bao, Tempura Bekti with Sriracha Mayo and Pickled Cucumber, Chinese Chorizo, Bacon and Egg Sheng jian Bao inspired by the Chinese Breakfast Baos, Grilled Mushroom and Asparagus Sheng jian Bao, Thai Melon Salad, Ghost Chicken Salad, Yum Nua (Thai Spicy Beef Salad), Chongqing Chicken, Smoked Sriracha Pork Spare Ribs, Spicy Edamame steamed and topped with sea salt, crispy garlic and fresh Asian greens, Snow peas stir fried with ginger and chili and lots more. An extensive selection of dim sums and gyoza are also on the menu followed by an exhaustive selection of small plates, which include Sichuanese roasted aubergines with chili garlic sauce; Crispy Sesame Tofu served with Sriracha sauce and raw papaya salad; Duck Nachos topped with Five spice shredded roast duck, hoisin mayonnaise, sliced cucumber, crispy duck skin and tofu cheese sauce; Lop Cheung Bao- spicy Pork sausages, wrapped in a bao, steamed and topped with chili QP and more. A meal must end with some of the amazing desserts – try the eggless and sugar-free Kaffir Lime Panna Cotta with almond crumble, raspberry caviar, coconut and lime sorbet or the delectable eggless Fried Miso Apple Tart served with miso butterscotch and sour cream ice-cream. The other must-haves are the Sour Cherry Vacherin with sour cherry cream, lemon ash meringue, Matcha sponge and vanilla bean ice cream, and the absolutely scrumptious Peanut Butter Mousse – with peanut crunch, caramelised bananas, banana ice-cream, and cocoa cake.
