5 offbeat destinations to propose in India

Pop the question in a unique setting!

The trend of proposing before tying the knot is quickly catching up in India, with many choosing to go down on one knee and ask the question to their loved one. And while there are many ways to go about it, with most opting for quintessentially romantic spots like Paris or London, India has its own set of offbeat locations to offer—from
Shillong in Meghalaya to Neil Island in the Andaman and Nicobar islands.

Read ahead to discover five destinations that are the perfect blend of romance and uniqueness, and will make for a proposal of a lifetime.

Amid the cherry blossoms in Shillong, Meghalaya

During the months of October and November, the city of Shillong comes to life with bursts of pastel pink in every corner, thanks to cherry blossom season. Needless to say, this is one of the best times to visit and relive all your K-drama fantasies by walking under the pink canopies of cherry blossoms lining the streets, and turning the roads into flower carpets. Pick a quiet corner or a spot in one of the parks to pop the question.

Under a starry sky in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan

We’ll admit that Rajasthan is definitely not an offbeat location—with its forts and palaces, it’s one of the most romantic, and popular destinations to not only visit as a couple but also tie the knot at. But Jaisalmer in the far-flung west provides the perfect secluded location to propose at. While it makes for a picturesque view during the day with its undulating golden dunes stretching as far as the eyes can see, at night the sky comes alive with plenty of twinkling stars. Propose to the love of your life in front of a romantic bonfire with the starry sky serving as the perfect backdrop.

Surrounded by lush bamboo forests and waterfalls in Aizawl, Mizoram

Aizawl is one of the most naturally-blessed destinations in the North East, with rolling green valleys and scenic waterfalls at every corner. Choose the blue mountain Phawngpui, the highest peak in the state, as the proposal venue of choice—the view from the top is breathtaking, and the trek leads to just the right amount of anticipation. What better way to celebrate making your way up to the top than by going down on one knee?

On a hot air balloon in Lonavala, Maharashtra

You don’t need to head all the way to Cappadocia in Turkey for the hot air balloon experience—all you have to do is head to Lonavala. There are plenty of places offering a hot air balloon safari in the region. You’re in the air for about two to three hours, giving you ample time to get cosy and comfortable before you propose. Our suggestion, discuss with the balloon operator if you can pack a small picnic, making it the perfect way to celebrate the once-in-a-lifetime moment. This experience will give the phrase ‘love is in the air’ a whole new meaning!

In the ocean at Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep), Andaman and Nicobar Islands

While its neighbour Havelock gets all the attention when it comes to stunning beaches and scuba diving opportunities, the comparatively less-crowded and serene Neil Island (renamed Shaheed Dweep) is the perfect choice if you want to propose in a quieter, calmer surrounding. It offers plenty of turquoise beaches, powdery white sand, and most of all, clear views of the rich marine life. Go scuba diving with your partner, and ask them to marry you surrounded by vibrant coral reefs and fish. We can’t think of a more surreal setting!
