The monsoons bring with them a sense of calm, thrill, and a rosy-eyed lens to view an otherwise mundane existence of our daily life. The downpours calls for dancing in the rain and getting drenched under a not-so-protective umbrella. Yet, much like the two sides of a coin, these simple joys come at a cost—damaged hair and unbearable amounts of hair fall. Indian monsoon can often cause several hair problems such as an oily or greasy scalp, dandruff, and itchiness. But fret not, we’ve got you covered. Whether you’ve been experiencing these problems or want to take every step in the book to prevent them, here’s a guide that will help you take care of your hair this rainy season.
Oil your hair
Perhaps one of the oldest and most trusted tricks in the book, oiling your hair regularly will do wonders to its texture, strength, and quality. During the monsoon season, your hair can become super greasy and you may avoid oiling it to reduce the stickiness. However, this may worsen your problem. Oil serves as nourishment to your hair along with being anti-fungal and anti-microbial which strengthens your hair and also increases blood circulation among the follicles. Oiling will also reduce frizziness that can arise during the rainy season. We’d definitely recommend using natural-ingredient based oils such as coconut oil infused with herbs like neem and amla.
Avoid chemical based products
Although this is a golden rule to follow all year round, we’d definitely recommend avoiding chemical-based hair products in your haircare routine during the monsoons. Sulphates and parabens in the shampoo worsen the hair damage and have a direct impact on the roots of your hair. Take your pick from a host of natural and herbal shampoos such as shikakai to target dandruff and greasiness.
Natural hair packs
If you want to squeeze in some time for some extra TLC and pampering you can also make DIY hair packs with readily available ingredients found in the shelves of your kitchen. These include a ground mixture of curry leaves, fenugreek seeds, tulsi leaves and green gram. You can apply it on your scalp and leave it on for about thirty minutes before you wash it off. Another hair pack that is quick to make is a mixture of turmeric and neem which have anti-bacterial properties—much-needed during the rains.
Washing your hair after getting drenched in the rain is a must
There’s nothing more romantic than dancing in the rain with your beau or going for a walk to make the most of the rainy weather. However, it’s not always hunky-dory post the adventure. When your hair gets drenched by rainwater, the acidity present in that water may lead to an imbalance in the pH level of your scalp make your hair greasy and sticky. So, it may be best to wash your hair right after your rainy day adventure.
Pay attention to your eating habits
It’s no doubt that the downpours call for a cup of hot masala chai, pakoras and a plate of Maggi to go with it. However, constantly eating oily food or meals outside will do little good to your digestive system and will only intensify your hair and scalp problems. So, while you can definitely indulge in those cravings once in a while, it might be best to maintain a healthy and balanced diet incorporating vitamin-rich foods like leafy greens, flax seeds and dry fruits. Cauliflower, chia seeds, walnuts, and broccoli are also rich in biotin and omega-3, which provides the correct nutrition to your hair.
