We’ll paint a picture for you: the sky is overcast and soon, it starts pouring, washing away the possibility of any Saturday afternoon plans. So, you and your partner decide to instead make a cup of chai or hot chocolate, snuggle up, and watch a movie. But choosing the perfect movie can be hard and can end in unwarranted argument and waste of time. So, we made it a tad easier for you. Here’s a list of some of our favourite movies that are warm, cosy, and nostalgic—everything you’d want on a rainy day. Read on.
Wake Up Sid
A personal favourite, Wake Up Sid is a film that will make you fall in love with the Maximum City—or remind you why you loved it in the first place. Directed by Ayan Mukerji, the movie follows the stories of two strangers, who meet one night and go on to become flatmates and companions to each other. The movie is set against the backdrop of a sweltering and tepid summer, culminating into the romanticised version of Mumbai rains that brings forth the endless possibility of love, warmth, and nostalgia.
Clouds
If you’re in the mood for an endearing and tear-jerking film, Disney’s Clouds, which is based on a true story is a must-watch. It follows the journey of a 17-year-old Zach Sobiach, who has been diagnosed with a terminal form of cancer. We see how, through the months, he learns to live a more fulfilling life, rather than caring about the superficial things most of us give so much importance to. We see him fall in love and grow closer to his family than ever before. The lesson? “You didn’t need to know you’re dying to start living.”
Dil Toh Pagal Hai
For those who want to embrace their inner old-school romantic and are ‘90s Bollywood loyalists, re-watch classics such as Dil Toh Pagal Hai for some tears, laughter, and a whole lot of love. The film takes us through a whirlwind journey of three friends and lovers, against the backdrop of romantic monsoons and swoon-worthy songs. The film, starring Shahrukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit Nene and Karisma Kapoor, will leave you feeling warm and fuzzy—good thing you decided to cuddle with your beau.
The Notebook
It just wouldn’t be right to curate a monsoon movie list without including The Notebook. Based on the Nicholas Sparks novel by the same name, the movie tells a love story in all its convoluted glory. She’s from a rich family, he didn’t have two pennies to spare, but nothing—even seven years of being away—keeps them apart. This watch will definitely leave you with a tear (or two), smiles, and the ceaseless desire to keep you partner close to you.
Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na
If you want to reminisce the good old college days, the inklings of a new love story, or just simpler times, we’d recommend watching Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na. It follows the stories of a group of friends layered with the typical drama that a 20-something-year-old would face—dealing with relationships, trust, and priorities. With a fabulous mix of songs, hilarious dialogues, and scenes that will make you go ‘awww’, this is the perfect movie to watch, while sipping on some hot chocolate and cuddling with your partner.
Jab We Met
This Imtiaz Ali film will have our heart forever...for real. Starring Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor, the film is about two absolutely opposite characters finding themselves in a unique situation against the backdrop of the Indian railways at first, and the fields of Punjab a little later. Through twists, turns, and iconic dialogues, the two find their way back to each other, with a promise of love and commitment.
Dirty Dancing
While holidaying with her parents at a countryside resort for the summer, Frances (aka Baby) finds herself attracted to the resort's dance instructor with his beyond suave moves. She takes it upon herself to learn dance with him, and soon, the two inevitably fall for each other. Like all love stories, this one too has its trials and tribulations, but their love wins at the end of it all. Watch this for incredible dance moves, stellar music, and amazing chemistry. The movie may help turn the heat up amid a rainy day and cosy covers.
Set against the opulence of The Oberoi Udaivilas, Diya and Dhruv’s wedding was a multi-day celebration of heritage, elegance, and a love story years in the making.
