Are lash serums dangerous? Here's everything you need to know.

Better safe than sorry!

Lash serums are not a new craze; everyone wants thick, luscious eyelashes without having to glue an extension. Lash serums are designed to promote the growth and thickness of eyelashes through the use of active ingredients such as prostaglandins or analogues. These work by prolonging the growth phase of the lashes and increasing the number of lashes. However, before you let your infatuation with this product take over, you should know that it’s a controversial one and not without its risks.

Lash serums have an extremely high potential to irritate the eye or cause allergic reactions; there have been reports of redness, itching, or swelling of the eyelids and the surrounding area. Chances of facing such complications increase if you have a history of eye conditions or are currently undergoing treatment.

Here is what you can do to ensure a lash serum does not have an adverse effect on you.

Patch test

It is always advisable to use a product after patch-testing it. Apply a small amount of the serum to a small area on your arm and monitor for any adverse reactions for at least 24 hours before applying it to your lashes.

Follow instructions

Use the serum as directed by the manufacturer. Avoid excessive application or contact with the eyes. If you feel even the slightest irritation, discontinue using the product.

Consult a professional

If you have concerns or questions about lash serums, seek guidance from a dermatologist or ophthalmologist.
