All The Ways To Glam Up Your Lashes

Expert eyelash artist and owner of salon The Stunnery, Jaimini Maniar tells you all you need to know about eyelash extensions

Your eyes are easily among the first features people notice. While products can help enhance them, long, dark, and voluminous lashes make the biggest difference.

Eyelash extensions are the perfect solution if you want to emphasise your eyes and avoid the hassle that comes with heavy, fake lashes or multiple coats of mascara.

Brides Today: Tell us the basics of eyelash extensions.

Jaimini Maniar: These are individual lashes that are systematically applied to each of your natural lashes, making them appear longer and thicker. They last up to three to five weeks depending on your lash renewal cycle. We lose one to four lashes a day and our entire set is replaced every three to five weeks, and your extensions will fall out with them. For this reason, we call them semi-permanent extensions as you will need to refill and add new ones every two to four weeks depending on how you want them to look.

BT: What can you expect at your appointment?

JM: Arrive for your consultation sans makeup, which will allow your artist to assess the health of your natural lashes. They can create different looks for you, from light and wispy daytime one to a fully dramatic party style. Bring pictures of what you like and don’t like. Lash artists mainly play with length and curl to suit your eye shape and personal taste. The appointment will last between two to three hours depending on the fullness of the look you choose.

BT: What are the precautions to take?

JM: Prolonged wear of lashes that are too thick and too heavy can cause damage to your natural lashes. Beware of ‘cluster lashes’, which are a bunch of three to five lashes that are applied to one natural lash. Do your research and find an artist who prioritises the health of your natural lashes over simply giving you volume.

BT: What sort of aftercare is needed?

JM: Any form of oil will wear away the lash extension. The first 24-48 hours are the most critical, and your artist will ask you to avoid all water and oil (yes, that includes sweat). After a day, water is no longer the enemy and you can wash and pat dry your lashes as much as you want. Washing and cleaning your lashes daily is important to retaining your extensions and the continued health of your natural lashes.
