Actress Samantha Ruth Prabhu tied the knot with filmmaker Raj Nidimoru in a hush-hush traditional ceremony on December 1, and while the wedding came as a surprise for her fans, what grabbed even more eyeballs was the actress' huge engagement ring. The rock, poised on her finger as she posed with her now-husband Nidimoru, has become the talk of the town, with the internet collectively losing it over the blinding rock.
For her big day, Prabhu chose a custom Arpita Mehta silk saree, and ditching the pastel trend, she went for the classic red. She looked every bit gorgeous as she completed her look with traditional gold jewellery, each of which seemed to be crafted just for her special day. With a minimalist mehendi design on her palms and her hair bun wrapped with jasmine flowers, Prabhu married Nidimoru in an intimate ceremony at the serene Linga Bhairavi Devi abode inside the Isha Yoga Center, Coimbatore.
A rare cut diamond ring with a history
For all those talking about the origin of Prabhu's diamond ring, the portrait-cut vintage piece has been designed by Athens-based jewellery designer Theodoros Savopoulos, who largely remains off the radar and away from the public eye.
The portrait cut, though uncommon, has a rich history originating from India itself, and it gained popularity during the regime of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. According to reports, the portrait cut is one of the earliest diamond cuts, and it gained popularity when Shah Jahan had transparent thin diamonds placed over hand-painted portraits to protect them.
The mysterious designer behind the ring
The unique ring, which has become the talk of the town, is one of the limited pieces made by Savopoulos, who prefers to remain "purposefully unknown" to most.
Reports state that he operates almost entirely off the radar and releases an annual production of one-of-a-kind jewellery. He also reportedly caters to only an "exclusive clientele of the most discerning collectors and connoisseurs".
His creations are highly contemporary and gem-centric, and he has even worked on designs with the coveted Paraiba tourmaline and other rare gems.
Prabhu's ring, now firmly a part of a cultural moment, has set a new trend and benchmark when it comes to luxury artistry. It is bold and unforgettable, much like the actress herself.
