Your 101 guide to choosing your floral wedding décor

Brides Today India spoke to Interflora founder, Anuja Joshi about creating experiences with floral décor—from the choice of flowers to sustainable practices and more.

The big fat Indian wedding would be incomplete without the dozens of flowers that pave the wedding aisle and surround the tables and tables of delectable food. In India, flowers are an integral and significant part of the wedding shenanigans—not only as a visual treat but as a reflection of the to-be-wedded couple, besides being of importance during the ceremony itself. From pink and white roses to lilies and orchids—wedding décor is definitely serious business. With the advent of spring—a season that screams all things floral—we decided to curate a list of all the keep-in-minds and good-to-knows for some spring wedding décor.

Brides Today (BT): With winter weddings so common, how does one ensure that the decor stands out?
Anuja Joshi (AJ): Each wedding is unique. While we always look at the holistic picture, we never miss out on details. We aim to make wedding experiences extra special by making sure our blooms touch every guest. Some essentials of a winter wedding are the use of warmer hues to set the mood right, rustic table settings, embracing foliage, statement arcs, etc.

BT: What is the modern Indian couple looking for?
AJ: We are noticing that while couples still want their weddings to be opulent and grand, they prefer a much more organic and nature-inspired decor. Couples are taking a much more sustainable approach and finding ways to repurpose and experiment with blooms. The modern couple also wants to respect their value system on their big day. They appreciate and are open to new ideas.

BT: What are the top five trends in floral decor according to you?
AJ: As each wedding is unique, we tend to hyper-focus on details rather than trends. A lot of couples are going for organic foliage-heavy decor—think garden decor with a sea of wildflowers and radiant blooms inspired by the garden of Versailles.

BT: What should the consumer keep in mind before choosing the decor?
AJ: Our floral decor is not just about what looks good at a point in time. Our goal is to create everlasting memories through our beautiful blooms. We think it’s important that couples really think about the love they share and draw inspiration from that rather than chase trends. They also need to keep a few details in mind like whether the venue is indoor or outdoor, whether it is a day or a night function, what the scale of the event is, what the seasonal flowers are and how we can work with them, etc.

BT: How much of a role does sustainability play when it comes to wedding decor?
AJ: The modern couple is conscious and is willing to go the extra mile and build their day of love around sustainability. One can adopt sustainability by preserving flowers and repurposing them to give them new life. For instance, we turned Alia & Ranbir’s wedding flowers into candles.  We begin by asking the couple how they would like to integrate sustainability into the process. We also present them with the option to choose locally-sourced blooms and take a proactive approach to be sustainable. Sustainable practices can be integrated right from conceptualisation all the way to waste management post the event.

BT: How important is it for the personality of the bride and groom to be associated with the decor?
AJ: It’s the most important thing there is! Their story is instrumental in curating an experience that aligns with their ideas, values, and principles. We visually share their story through the decor and it is for the couple to enjoy their day.
