Real Weddings: A Dreamy Affair in the Maldives

Amidst the sun, sand and sunset unfolded Abhay Katyal and Disha Sharma's journey from friendship to love.

Entrepreneurs Abhay Katyal and Disha Sharma first met during their school days. However, as school came to an end, the two decided to go their respective ways. Across continents, despite living miles apart, they kept in touch—going from strength to strength, friendship to love.

After 11 years of togetherness, preparations for an intimate wedding celebration began in full swing. Both Abhay and Disha had dreamt of hosting a close-knit affair along the beach. And, what better destination than the Maldives? To ensure safety amid the ongoing pandemic, each guest was tested before their arrival on the island in spite of being fully vaccinated.

The 2-day affair—with roughly 50 people in attendance—kickstarted with a mehendi event, followed by the engagement ceremony. A haldi, sangeet, and reception also took place along the two days. “There is no one word to describe these moments. When you are with a person for so long, you keep falling in love with them, over and over again," the couple said.

"We were always clear that we wanted to host an intimate wedding, unlike the traditional big-fat-Indian wedding. In terms of décor, we opted for a minimal aesthetic, allowing the serenity of the location to shine through. It took us nearly one month to plan our nuptials and it all turned out perfectly," adds Disha.

Shrey Bhagat, Co-founder, Knotting Bells Photography, says, "When Disha and Abhay approached us, we instantly knew that it was going to be a great experience. With the two of them open to new ideas, we were able to get our creative juices flowing. Plus, due to the restricted guest list, we were able to capture everyone in their element. At the end of it all, we didn't feel like professional photographers but a part of their family."

Abhay and Disha's wedding was a dream come true; a page from a fairytale. The couple got the opportunity to celebrate their love with their friends and family while basking in the Maldivian sun—what more does one want?
