Real Weddings: From the Perfect Christmas Proposal to Heartwarming Wedding Vows

After the couple got engaged in August, they had a private Nikah ceremony followed by an intimate court marriage to celebrate the union of their respective cultures. On 30th November they hosted a lavish wedding at Gallops in Mumbai, in the presence of their loved ones. But prior to the nuptials, the festivities kicked-off with a bridal shower hosted by Priyanka, Akshita's sister. Featuring a Parisian theme, the bridal shower brunch was filled with love, laughter, crepes, croissants and enjoyable games!

How did the two of you meet?

Taher and I first met through a common friend on Christmas night in 2016, at Ming Yang in Taj Lands End, Mumbai. It was a complete coincidence and my friend kept insisting we meet since she thought we'd instantly hit it off. According to her, we would both harp on about spirituality, souls etc, which was incoherent to most others around us!

Was there a formal proposal?

Yes! There was a beautiful proposal last year on Christmas Day, since that’s the day we had met at Taher's father’s grave. After we washed his tomb, he seeked his blessings and popped the question to me there and then. Afterwards, we spent the rest of the day painting. Later in the evening we went to Ming Yang for dinner, to relive the nostalgia of our first meeting.

Any anecdotes or memorable moments from the wedding?

On our wedding day we exchanged heartwarming vows. I did mine quoting a Shakespeare sonnet with profound promises and then he did some silly ones, which left us in splits! But, then came the 'real' vows; the ones which absolutely blew me away. I was caught by surprise and those beautiful words definitely become the highlight of the wedding, making for special memories I'll hold on to forever.

Any piece of advice you'd like to offer to couples planning their wedding?

Just remember, the wife is always right! But on a serious note, if your souls latch on to each other’s, don’t allow the 'human realm' things to get in the way. Spend quality time with your partner discussing and ironing out all your issues—major or minor—so you can enjoy marital bliss.

How are you and your partner spending time during the pandemic?

Throughout the lockdown Taher was with his family and I was with mine. We had no choice but to resort to FaceTime, because not being able to meet in person was hard. Now, we’re setting up our home together and are spending nights at different places such as banshees! It’s been great fun. I mean, who ever said that marriage would take all the fun away?
