Mirror, mirror on the wall, these are the prettiest of them all.

Mirror, mirror on the wall, these are the prettiest of them all.

Some used it to express social status. Others, to ward off the "evil eye". Traditionally known as abhala bharat or sheesha work, this ancient craft dates back centuries, yet continues to dominate wedding moodboards even today. Strictly artisanal, it typically involves mirror-work laden fabrics and has now made its way onto potlis, earrings and even jackets.

A closer look at the handstitched work reveals floral and leaf-like patterns, interspersed with square or round reflectives and patches. Designers blend it with gota patti via appliqué technique, enhanced in gold and silver thread. Conventionally colourful rather than muted, the contemporary canvas of sheesha work constitutes pastel tones and neutral shades to maximise wearability. Here’s a curation for your next ethnic look.

Abhinav Mishra

No one does Abhla quite like Abhinav Mishra. Here, the dreamy, misty blue perfectly offsets the sheen of the mirrorwork, complete with zari and sequins. Don’t miss the dramatic dori on the backless blouse, the perfect tie in to the overall regal look.

House Of Mish

A tradition captured in a modern silhouette, this artisanal pair by the House of Mish features abhala work by skilful kaarigars, alongside dangling tassels on the heel. Double-cushioned in notes of ivory, it’s sure to complement your wedding wear with comfort and class.

Twenty Nine

This embroidered jacket is the epitome of ethnic chic, composed in net with elaborate mirror work and a defined silhouette. Pair it with a statement necklace to enhance the plunging neckline for a showstopping look.

Itrh

A veil crafted in mirror jaal? Add to cart, immediately. Paired with the gold crushed tissue anarkali, it steals the spotlight and rightfully so, with just the right amount of desi dazzle!

Arpita Mehta

An ode to Abhala Bharat’s colourful past, Arpita Mehta’s sari sets stand tall as remnants of vintage glam. Pick from notes of coral, pink, and sea green and let the garment do the rest.

Twenty Nine

Back with a sharara, Twenty Nine’s masterclass in modern mirror work continues with this tissue-embroidered set. Pair it with a bandeau and pointed heels for that perfect pre-wedding look!

Preeti Mohan, Ritika Sachdeva

Abhala makes a playful pivot with jewellery, as seen in these chandbali pearl drop earrings by Preeti Mohan. Sparkling in silver, they’re easy to mix and match with all kinds of Indian wear.  Meanwhile, Ritika Sachdeva’s triple drop statement earrings emit thrice the shine with lotus-themed motifs.

Tarun Tahiliani

Sheesha work returns to its vibrant roots with this mini poli that’s totally maximalist in its appeal! Handstitched on cotton moss, it boasts a kaleidoscopic facade featuring stone beads, glass mirrors, and Swarovski pearls, with an embellished strap and drawstring tying it all together.
