Plunging necklines, simple cap sleeves, daring backless silhouettes complete with a dori—these are some of the usual designs that come to mind when one thinks of a standard blouse. Most times, we put all our effort into deciding on the sari, with the blouse being somewhat of an afterthought. So, if you’re looking to up your style game, and want your blouse to be the showstopper, then trying out different fits and textures is a good place to start. And who better to serve as fashion inspiration than Bollywood actors who have worn everything from pearl-covered blouses to blouses with trending bows in the recent past?

Scroll ahead to get inspired.

Scalloped hemlines

Alia Bhatt is no stranger to experimenting with her style, especially when it comes to wearing saris. From an elegant all-black velvet sari paired with pearls to wearing a custom ajrakh print sari by Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla for an awards ceremony in Riyadh, she’s given us many one-of-a-kind looks. Recently, she donned another velvet sari, a chocolate brown one, paired with a stunning embroidered blouse featuring cap sleeves and a unique scalloped hemline. Picking a non-traditional hemline is one of the easiest ways to add an element of interest to your blouse, and you can’t go wrong with a scalloped one. As with any statement blouse, keep the rest of your look simple to let the blouse shine.

Part corset, part blouse

Kriti Kharbanda tied the knot with Pulkit Samrat last month, and her wedding trousseau featured outfits that married classic styles with modern elements. While she wore a lime-green off-shoulder blouse and sari combo for her chooda ceremony, she chose a corseted zardozi blouse and a modern sari drape for her mehendi ceremony. So, if you’re looking to switch up your usual traditional attire with something more contemporary, wearing a corset instead of a blouse is a great idea.

Bow-core galore

2023 was the year of the bow, with coquette-core becoming a big part of our closets and how. Given that everything from nail art, to hair accessories and shoes has got the cute bow treatment, of course, blouses wouldn’t have been far behind. Janhvi Kapoor recently showed us how to style a blouse with a bow back. She paired it with a retro floral red and white saree and a half-up half-down updo to tie the outfit together. With a dramatic winged eyeliner and a swipe of a nude shade lipstick, the look is complete. If you’re attending a summer wedding, this will be the perfect fit!

Pearls for extra bling

Pearls have quickly progressed from being just jewellery to being a part of ensembles, literally. With the rise of the pearl-core trend in the past two years, pearl-embellished OTT outfits are taking over the fashion world. From Janhvi Kapoor to Deepika Padukone, many Bollywood actresses have hopped onto the trend, with Sara Ali Khan being the latest one. When wearing pearls-heavy attire, make sure to keep the rest of your look minimal so you don’t go overboard. Put your hair up into a bun, opt for subtle makeup, and skip any other accessories.

Padded shoulders for a structured look

Who says power dressing only means blazers and pantsuits? Traditional wear like blouses can be a part of it, too—it’s all about the fit. For instance, padded, wide shoulders on a blouse elevate the look, giving off major boss energy, as Kriti Sanon’s outfit shows. Our tip? Experiment with patterns and textures to add more oomph. Finally, to make sure all eyes are on the statement blouse, choose a monochrome fit like Sanon and finish the look with bold makeup and simple accessories.
