Art Loving Couples, Take Note - Sotheby's Is Finally Here In India
International auction house from New York-Sotheby’s just announced plans to launch sales in India and we can't keep calm!
Come December 2018, India gets her first taste of a Sotheby's auction at the iconic Taj Mahal Palace Hotel. Taking Sotheby's commitment to South Asia a step further, Mumbai will be the new selling location for the brand. There has been an ever-growing presence of Indian collectors in Sotheby's global auction and the development of a vibrant, domestic Indian art market led to this decision and who could be a better choice to inaugurate this sale than 'Durga'-the seminal painting by none other than Tyeb Mehta.

'Promising signs and the projected economic growth for India in the future tell us that this is the right time for Sotheby’s to further expand the services we offer our clients in the region, and to bring our auctions directly to the doorstep of the many collectors who live there', says Jan Prasens, Sotheby’s Managing Director for Europe, Middle East, Russia and India.
Under the mnemonic of 'Boundless: Mumbai', this launch will be iconic for the Indian market and collectors or enthusiasts throughout the country. Not only will it include important works by South Asia's greatest artists, but also artworks by western artists inspired and influenced by the art, culture, geography, and people of South Asia. 'Boundless: Mumbai' will present an opportunity for young and seasoned collectors to acquire great quality works from a variety of categories. Tyeb Mehta's most important work, Durga Mahisasura Mardini has been confirmed to lead the sale and it was directly commissioned from the artist in 1993 and has remained in private collection, since. One of the most valuable works of modern South Asian Art ever to be offered at auction, this piece is appearing on the market for the first time later this year. 'One of the most important artists in the country and a leading figure in the history of Indian modernism, Tyeb Mehta’s ‘Durga Mahisasura Mardini’ is possibly the most important work in the artist’s oeuvre. A symbol of victory of good over evil, this painting celebrates the spirit of India. It is one of most provocative portrayals of goddess Durga defeating the mythical buffalo demon, Mahisasura', says Yamini Mehta, International Head of Indian & South Asian Art at Sotheby’s
We are super excited to witness history, are you?
