A Gujarati Bride Takes An Examination On Her Wedding Day, Before Tying the Knot

'Your wedding is the most important day of your life, ' they say. Although, this Indian bride doesn't seem to buy into this notion one bit. Shivangi Bagthariya from Rajkot, Gujarat, took the internet by storm when she was captured taking an examination in a heavily embroidered bridal attire. A student of Shanti Niketan College, she was appearing for her fifth-semester Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) paper.

'When the date of my marriage was finalised, the examination schedule hadn't been declared. As luck would have it, the date, as well as the morning muhūrta of marriage, clashed with my examination. I requested my parents as well as my to-be husband's family to tweak the muhūrta time so I could take the exam,' Shivangi told the Times of India. 'Education is a must for all, including women. Parents and girls should give importance to education,' she added.

The bride-to-be was lauded by netizens for getting her priorities in place, as the video gained momentum on social media. 'The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet,' commented a user. The widespread circulation also sent out an important message: Education. Comes. First.

In a country where women are discouraged to pursue education due to societal taboo—and, with as many as 23 million girls dropping out of school every year because communities are unwilling to provide proper feminine sanitation—it seems as though Shivangi's prompt decision was a step in the right direction.

As American leader, Brigham Young, once said, 'You educate a man, you educate a man; you educate a woman, you educate a generation.' The future is female, y'all.
