In a freewheeling chat, Ananya Panday, Tiger Shroff, and Tara Sutaria talk about shooting for Student of the Year 2, and their mantra fittness, fashion, love, and life.

Meet the stars of Student of the Year 2 (SOTY 2), a Punit Malhotra directorial venture, slated to release on May 9. Yet another big- budget, glamour-coded, and youth-oriented Dharma Productions entertainer, it marks the Bollywood debut of two bright and beautiful actors: Ananya Panday and Tara Sutaria. Starring opposite the six-film-old Tiger Shroff, synonymous with electrifying dance moves, SOTY 2 rides on the success of the first SOTY (2012) that launched the careers of actors Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, and Siddharth Malhotra, and put the aspirations of a dance- happy, party-easy, and style-savvy generation in the spotlight.
So, when we met the actors in a Mumbai studio for the cover shoot, the tone of the shoot and conversation was instantly set. Of course, our mood boards were prepared in advance—that of Manish Malhotra’s uber-sexy and rock-chic outfits—but a spontaneous ripple of energy permeated the floor. With ace couturier Malhotra being the costume designer of the film and the stylist of this shoot, there was a generous smattering of party-ready sparkle and sexy silhouettes. Top this with dark colours and bold makeup, and we knew we were in for a chart-busting shoot: millennial in spirit and vibe, and peppered with dashes of teasing humour, confiding honesty, and warm friendship. Perfectly in sync with our youthful, vibrant summer issue where young couples meet-cute, propose, and party the night away!

TELL US ABOUT SOTY 2.
TIGER: Well, we are not supposed to give anything away so I can’t say much.
ANANYA: If you want to have a lot of fun, come and watch it.
TARA: And, I just want to say that this film is about friendship, love, and everything in between, so please come and watch it.
TIGER: And, also about following your dreams.
WHO IS YOUR FAVOURITE CHARACTER FROM SOTY 1?
ANANYA: Can I answer? My favourite character is Varun’s [Dhawan] Rohan Nanda because he’s a big brat and I love brats.
TIGER: That’s tough, you want an honest answer or a diplomatic one? I think, yeah, I liked Varun’s character too.
TARA: I liked Varun’s character but I loved Sid’s (Siddharth Malhotra) character, Abhimanyu.

SO, NOBODY LIKED THE GIRL?
ALL SCREAM: No (laughs), we loved Shanaya [played by Alia Bhatt]!
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF SHOOTING FOR SOTY 2?
TARA: I think all of us loved shooting in Mussoorie [Uttarakhand], right? I think we had the most special time filming there.
ANANYA: We went for 45 days straight and came to know all the roads and, [at one point of time] felt like locals. At the end of it all, it felt like home.
TIGER: I liked Rishikesh because we got to swim in the Ganga and go rafting on the river, which was a lot of fun.
WHAT’S THE DOWNSIDE OF BEING CONSTANTLY PAPPED?
ANANYA: No, I love being papped and think it’s lots of fun!
TARA: I think it’s fun too, it’s lovely actually.
WHAT ABOUT YOU, TIGER? YOU’RE THE MOST POPULAR ONE.
TIGER: It’s okay, really. I mean they’re doing their job and there’s not much you can say. I don’t know, I feel like it’s not a bad thing, it doesn’t bother me but sometimes you’ve got food in your mouth and they catch you in an awkward position, that sort of thing is heartbreaking.
NOW, COMING TO THE SUBJECT OF FASHION, WHAT BAG ARE YOU CURRENTLY CARRYING?
ANANYA: I’m not much into high-end brands, so I carry my mom’s old, reversible, black and pink bag everywhere.
TIGER: I have a bag but I don’t know its brand, I’m not brand-conscious at all.
TARA: I carry different bags everyday but today it’s this beautiful caviar [leather] vintage Chanel.
SO GIRLS, FLATS OR HEELS?
ANANYA: Flats for sure, also sneakers!
TARA: Heels, bro (laughs)!
All clothing, Manish Malhotra. All jewellery, Kasmia Fine Jewellery.
TIGER, SHIRTS OR T-SHIRTS?
TIGER: Umm, can I say ganji?
SINCE ALL OF YOU HAVE THE FITTEST BODIES, TELL US ABOUT YOUR FITNESS MANTRA. ACCORDING TO YOU, WHAT IS THE BEST AND MOST FUN FORM OF WORKOUT?
TIGER: I like to dance, it’s fun. It doesn’t feel like you’re working out but it’s pretty intense cardio, especially when the three of us are (sic, were) rehearsing for songs, it’s quite a workout because SOTY2 has a peppy album. Other than that, I incorporate weight training, flexibility, and gymnastics.
HOW MANY HOURS EVERYDAY?
TIGER: If I’m not doing anything else all day then I’m training all day but, if I’m shooting, then definitely before or after the shoot.
ANANYA: My favourite is Pilates. It’s very good for stretching and I’m not flexible at all, so it really relaxes my body. I workout four times a week maybe, not very often.
TARA: I’ve trained all my life in classical ballet and I think that’s the best workout, especially for core strength.
IF YOU COULD HAVE A CHEAT DAY, WHAT WOULD YOU EAT?
ANANYA: Everything! Cookies, pancakes. We’d go to Bastian [in Mumbai].
TIGER: I’m on the same boat.
ANANYA: We’d sail to Bastian (laughs). I’d eat a lot of sweet stuff, I think.
TIGER: Yes, I have a major sweet tooth as well.
TARA: I cheat everyday. I don’t have a diet, everyday is a cheat day for me!
