Everything You Need to Know About Clip-In Hair Extensions

Here's why clip-in hair extensions could be your favourite wedding accessory.

Keeping her hair healthy and beautiful for her big day is usually on top of a bride’s checklist. And the prep starts early: Regular oiling, hair spas, massages, and the works. While all of this is great, you need a plan B—clip-in extensions. India’s leading hairstylists Sapna Bhavnani and Clarabelle Saldanha tell you how you can use extensions to create the perfect look.

What are they?

Clip-in extensions are exactly what their name suggests: Extensions that can be clipped in. They are made of real or synthetic hair and are a great tool to add instant thickness, length, and volume.

Material

Natural extensions are always a better option but are more expensive. 'Unlike synthetic, these can be heat styled, cut, and coloured to your preference. They also hold styles for longer and are more resistant to weather,' says Saldanha, whose client list includes the likes of Deepika Padukone and Janhvi Kapoor. While synthetic extensions are cheaper, they tend to look over shiny and artificial.

Colour

Choosing the correct colour is key. Consult a colourist and pick your extensions based on the way your hair will look on your wedding day. “If your colour match is right, everything will blend well and create a naturally seamless look. If a bride has coloured or highlighted hair, she’ll need to pick extensions in her base colour, which can then be coloured to match by an expert,” says Saldanha. Go for tapered edges as they look more natural as compared to blunt ones.

Preparation

While clip-ins are designed to be a part of your hair, the fact is, they are not. 'The feeling of something foreign may be a bit uncomfortable at first, so it’s best to have a trial run ahead of your big day and get used to the weight of having extra hair,' suggests Bhavnani.

Post Care

Clip-in extensions are an investment and you should be able to use them more than once. 'For maximum longevity, treat them as you would your natural hair. When using heat styling, use a hair protectant, and be sure to wash and condition them a day before the event. Brush them out before and after wearing. When not in use, lay them flat and store in a box,” says Bhavnani. With good care, they can last you for years.
