Are You Making These Skincare Mistakes in the Shower?

Attention, attention—stop, ASAP.

Lather up, rub on, and rinse—while you may think taking a shower is far from complex, you could actually be committing some *major* beauty blunders in the bath. From setting the water temperature all wrong to soaking up in the shower for a prolonged period of time, dermatologists have reason to believe that common yet crucial steps in your bathing process could be seriously damaging your skin.

One of India's top aesthetic cosmetologists, Dr Simal Soin reveals all that you need to bear in mind while engaging in the routine activity.

Avoid Extremely Hot Baths

Yes, we agree a warm bath is soothing and therapeutic, however, while the the scalding water is helping your nerves, it could be damaging your skin. "Opt for lukewarm water instead. Hot water tends to extract all the moisture out of your skin, leaving it parched and dry, which can consequently result in flaking, itchiness, and tightness," explains Dr Soin.

Avoid Extremely Cold Baths

Love a cold shower to awaken your senses? The next time, think twice. "While it may be a testament of your tolerance level, exceedingly cold water can cause significant damage to your skin by dilating the blood in the face, causing redness and eventually leading to the thickening of blood vessels that trigger thread veins," she informs.

Avoid Indulging in Long Showers

A soothing and relaxing bath proves to be the perfect remedy after a long, stressful day. However, were you aware that spending far too long in a bath can leave your skin dry and irritated? Taking a long shower can wash away the skin’s natural moisture. So, why not save water as well as your skin?

Avoid Rubbing Your Skin Too Harshly

In a tearing hurry to get dry and dressed, one often tends to rub too harshly at their skin, which can leave you with irritated and damaged areas. Instead, Dr Soin advises you to take a moment and pat yourself down gently. "Use a soft towel to dab your skin with the pat-dry technique—especially on sensitive areas such as the face—instead of rubbing the towel roughly on the skin.

Face Wash—First or Last?

Should one wash their face in the beginning or at the end of the showering process? According to Dr. Soin, you must cleanse your face post your shower, owing to the fact that by then the pores have opened up due to the steam and soak effect, allowing for a more effective cleansing.

Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise!

Make this your skincare mantra. "As a response to the steam and soak during your bath, the pores in your skin naturally open up, thereby making it more receptive to absorption of potent formulas such as a cream or a serum. Basically, post a shower is the best time to apply products on your skin for maximum benefit.
